The Structure That Sets Me Free

My morning routine has been patchy since Morocco. I’ll be honest about that.

When it goes well, I start the day ready. Primed. More in tune with myself.

To put it simply, I feel better. It sets me up to stay at or near my best for the rest of the day.

The things that get in the way usually happen the evening before. The ripple effect is I’m either tired when I wake up, or just not as clear. So I take it easy on myself.

I’ve been good about the gym though. And having seen my physio today for the first time in 6 weeks, I now have a clear exercise plan for the next stage of my ankle recovery.

That helps me too. Linking my daily activities to something meaningful in the long-term.

When I commit to my chosen routine, and follow it, I feel better and I perform better.

The flip side is that it’s summer. It was my birthday this week. We had a couple of fun social events over the weekend.

There’s a balance between not being bound by the routine and being enabled by it.

If I miss it for a day or two, that’s when it matters most to reengage rather than let the drift continue. I did that well this week, after not doing it well at the end of last week.

So it’s patchy. I’m okay with that. There’s room for improvement, no doubt.

It’s not a benchmark I’m chasing. It’s knowing I’ll feel better and have better days because of it.

A process to elevate me. Not a cage to feel restricted by.

  • What’s enough structure to set you free?
  • What would it take for you to reengage, next time you drift?
