Something’s Not Right

Apparently Musk is stepping back from his role in the White House to mind his own business(es), literally.

Apparently the US is mid u-turn on its tariff threats with China.

Perhaps, just maybe, after a few months of bully-boy tactics, the lads feel lonely and isolated. Or maybe they’re bored teasing their current targets and they’ll move on to new ones soon.

It’s beyond our control.

Que sera sera, whatever will be will be.

I met a new client organisation a few months ago. They wanted to engage in some ‘leadership development’ because they knew in themselves, Something’s Not Right.

Plenty, of course, was going well. There was lots to be pleased about.

But the niggle….they couldn’t put their finger on it. They could point to a few examples of obvious unwanted behaviour, without agreeing on what might be causing it. It was just someone else’s fault.

I was keen to understand two things before making any recommendations, so I brought in a colleague who’s an expert in areas I am not:

  1. What behaviour was the organisational system (its culture, its people and its ways of working) encouraging and/or allowing?
  2. What change is required in the organisation’s design and thinking to drive the behaviours that will enable the business to thrive in the years to come?

It’s exciting to think what this organisation is capable of if a few changes are made. That change process is within the control of the organisation’s leadership, not beyond it.

My physical fitness is not where it is usually, and it’s niggling at me.

I’ve taken some steps to address things, but more are required. Progress is slow.

Tonight I invest in some short-term pain for some long-term gain. My right calf will experience the delight of some dry needling in an effort to release some knots that limit my ability to run.

There’s lots to release.

Each knot released is like an electric shock. In a weird way, it’s satisfying. But it’s really not pleasant.

I can’t put words on it – just like my client couldn’t put their finger on it.

The old Simpsons episode where the family gives each other shock therapy comes to mind.

Maybe I’ve more in common with Trump and Musk than I care to admit. Maybe I’ve been ignoring the root cause for too long, and shock therapy is what I’ve resorted to!

Whether it’s at the level of society, family, organisation or your own self – you know when Something’s Not Right.

  1. Look at the bigger picture, understand the component parts
  2. Work with someone you trust so you’re not limited to your own thinking
  3. Control what you can in response, take action
  4. Keep reviewing what’s working and what’s not, and take further action on the back of it.
