Runways and Turbulence

I’ve just landed in Lisbon. On the flight I remembered that I hadn’t drafted my weekly email to you.

Busy week leading up to this morning. But nonetheless, it was on my radar and i just let it slip.

Last week’s email was delayed to Monday because a key person in the process was sick.

I couldn’t let a second week in a row slip, that’s when bad habits kick in!

And nor could my travelling companion, aka accountability thorn in my side.

He ‘dared’ me to get ‘turbulence’ and ‘runway’ in the message. So there you go Bren – you old kidder you!

The flight was smooth, until he woke me up as I dozed off. Seriously, who does that?!

Yesterday I met a client who’s 48, successful, and curious about what the “next level” looks and feels like for him.

By the end of the call, he knew what he wanted from our coaching programme.

He realised he didn’t want to think about the next 12 months.

He wanted to think about the next 12 years.

Not just in terms of his own goals, but the impact he could have on everyone around him. Family. Friends. Charities.

That moment has stayed with me.

Because it’s the same kind of thinking I’ve come to Lisbon to do.

I’m here with a fellow coach for two days of uninterrupted space. No agenda. Just time to think, talk, and people-watch.

Sometimes the best ideas, the truest insights, only surface when we stop trying to force them.

We’ll probably challenge each other a bit too. And we’ll rest, eat well, and have a laugh…

So as you read this, maybe ask yourself:

  • What time horizon are you working to?
  • And when was the last time you created enough space to really think about it?
