I absolutely love the west coast of Ireland.
From West Cork up to North Donegal, there is a unique freshness to the air and soulfulness to the land that I’ve never experienced elsewhere.
Perhaps it’s because the air is filled with the wild and rugged scents, sounds and scenes that only the Atlantic ocean offers its neighbouring coastline.
Perhaps the land retains the imprints and footprints of the hardships those generations before us experienced here.
Whatever it is, the west coast of Ireland has a paradoxically vibrant energy that sits alongside a stunning stillness.
It’s unique.
I don’t take a few days to unwind when I get down here. I decompress immediately.
I proposed to Ciara on Erisbeg mountain, Roundstone. She jokes that this was my way of ensuring we always came back.
Edie and Nico have been holidaying here since they were a few months old each.
Last year, after spending a month in France and Spain, we came to Connemara for a few weeks too. Afterwards, we ask them what their favourite moments were all summer.
- Connemara – running free with their friends
- The ferry journey from Rosslare to Bilbao
- My birthday, snorkelling off a speedboat on the Costa Brava.
Being outdoors in nature, I know what it gives me. My entire system recalibrates.
Any stress and built up tension eases out of me. My emotional, psychological and physical batteries all recharge simultaneously.
Last April, Paul Gleeson and I sat down to think how we could bring our shared love for the outdoors and nature into our work more.
We figured it out. Sometimes we can head west. Sometimes we can plan trips further afield to the Alps or beyond.
And sometimes we can do it in Dublin, in a day.
