Do Your Guardrails Hurt You?

We can be very critical of ourselves sometimes, can’t we?

Even the most serene spiritual teachers tell stories of inner frustration, judgement and criticism. We’re only human after all.

A fellow coach told me a while ago that he missed a day’s meditation. He broke the chain of consecutive days in his highest priority habit. He was livid with himself.

Then he realised how ridiculous his frustration was. And how counterproductive too! He saw the funny side and laughed at himself.

His meditation practice had helped him in many areas of his life. So he re-engaged with it, but with greater ease.

He later told me how transformative this shift in approach had been. The rigid guardrail of his previous practice where his inner dialogue was “I need to meditate every day” was limiting the positive effects.

When he re-engaged with greater ease, he noticed his inner dialogue shifting to “I choose to meditate most days”. His guardrails went from being rigid and hurtful, to looser yet more supportive.

From an electric fence to the ropes of a boxing ring.

When he missed a day, he bounced back faster.

How strict do you tend to be with yourself? Which areas of life are you more disciplined in your approach?

Isn’t it great when you find a commitment, challenge or goal enjoyable, even when it’s not easy?

If you’re enjoying the challenge, that suggests to me that you’re working to your strengths in pursuit of a meaningful goal that matters to you.

It’s very worthwhile clarifying how your goals and commitments can be framed as vehicles or pathways towards a life you choose to create for yourself.

Then choose the guardrails that help you stay on track, without hurting you or your chances of success.
